Is TV Really That Bad for Kids?

For the past few days since Savannah has been so gassy and ill I've allowed her to watch an enormous amount of television as it is the ONLY thing that has seemed to settle her. Well, now she's waking up and demanding in her own little way to watch the "T" as she calls it. So now she's becoming spoiled to watching it when she wants. I know that if I could keep her entertained more, then we wouldn't have the need for television, but on cold days when she's sick, what else am I to do?

Take today for example. I still haven't worked out or had a shower and the to do list is growing. I've cleaned up crushed cheerios twice and also resorted my coupons as she dumped my organizer onto the floor. (For those of you that know me well, this was crossing the line . . . no one touches the coupons, even a cute chubby cheeked baby!) The bottom line is that if she isn't sitting quietly in front of the TV how am I to get anything done?? So, I'm looking for some comments on your opinions of TV. After all, we all watched it and turned out okay, right?!

When we were little, my parents only let me and my sisters watch ONE HOUR of TV a week!!! How in the world did they do it? I hate to admit that Caroline watches way too much tv, too. I do limit her watching to "educational" tv. I think I tell myself that to make myself feel better. It is hard to get things done around the house with them constantly tagging behind you. I wish I had some better advice. I need it, too:)

a little tv/movies are ok i think but for selected programs. could it be that the to-do list is too long? savannah won't remember that you didn't get your list done but she will remember and learn from spending time with mommy. don't let the little stuff crowd out the important things. we're all guilty of that and we all, myself included maybe need to rethink what's important. let her watch elmo while you're cleaning up crumbs or maybe give her a little whisk broom so she can help you. what better workout than doing situps with her on your stomach? ouch :) when she is feeling better things will get back to normal. wish we were closer to help out :(
keep us posted dad/deb

I'm in the same boat this week! If only I had been smart enough to turn the tv on Tues. night when she was awake all.night.long....I just plan to spend next week retraining the TV addict who developed this week. When they're sick, you do what you must.

good evening dear friend. this is a good topic for mommies like us.
our view of the tv is that it is entertainment. there is a time for everything though. being entertained by something too much can lead to less creativity, wouldn't you say? we keep the tv off all day, unless it is turned on in the morning for a 30 minute show and in the afternoon for a 45 minute to an hour nature type show (both of which have been tivoed or are from a DVD) i don't even watch the news around my kids. oprah is tivoed for nighttime viewing for me. scott does turn football on, on sundays. that seems harmless. every thursday night we have movie night. tonight they watched the lion, the witch and the wardrobe. we are very picky about what they watch.
so that is what we do.
i watched too much tv growing up. it was always on. i believe it can be a good thing. in this day and age, i do not it is necessary to throw it out the window.
when my kids are sick. they do get to watch more. this is because it keeps them down. they are more apt to rest.
those are my thoughts. sorry this is so long.
love you.

As for my TV experience growing up, I got TV passes and was only able to watch 1-2 hrs/week. Now, has that shaped my TV watching now...who knows. At times in my life, I can look back and see how I used the TV to medicate pain (lonliness, exhaustion, boredom, or "just wanted to watch something that made my life not seem so bad") I think that is likewise true for children if we don't give them healthier choices.
Being that Chad and I spend a lot of time with teens, we completely see the effects of the abundance of technology. I really don't think it is any different than computer games, internet, and the such.
With all that being said, my boys usually watch 30 minutes - 1 hr/day...more on rainy days and this early fall: none b/c we were outside soooo much. I agree, as a mom, it is convenient to put a movie in to have some time to yourself. No matter what others think or say, Chrystal, give yourself a little grace! I'm saying this to myself as I write. Our boys really enjoyed the LEAP FROG DVDs and BABY EINSTEIN at her age. THose might be a good option?
